提單：是指用以證明海上貨物運輸合同和貨物已經由承運人接收或者裝船，以及承運人保證據以交付貨物的單證。(《海商法》第71條）簡稱B/L，在對外貿易中，運輸部門承運貨物時簽發給發貨人（可以是出口人也可以是貨代）的一種憑證。收貨人憑提單向貨運目的地的運輸部門提貨（若收貨人手里是小單，則需要向國內貨代換取主單），提單須經承運人或船方簽字后始能生效。D/O單是海運貨物向海關報關的有效單證之一。

海運提單Marine Bill of Lading or Ocean Bill of Lading，或簡稱為提單Bill of Lading,B/L，是國際結算中的一種最重要的單據?！稘h堡規則》給提單下的定義是：Bill of lading, means a document which evidences a contract of carriage by sea and the taking over or loading of the goods by the carrier, and by which the carrier undertakes to deliver the goods against surrender of the document.
